MEET THE TEAM
Chris "Behner" Behn
Chris "Behner" Behn
Chris "Behner" Behn
Owner/Team Principal and #3 Driver (hey I'm older than those other guys!). Also Primary wrench and Crew chief.
Growing up in rural Vermont, Chris honed his above average skills behind the wheel of a Cub Cadet learning how to make it do serious wheelies and later in a Honda Civic on the backroads long before being granted an official driver's license. Said Honda being his first victim in a poorly timed "Scandinavian flick" maneuver. Mechanic skills soon followed out of necessity. Chris has always had an affinity for things that go VROOM, from chainsaws to motorcycles to cars and racing this car on track with a 100+ fellow nut jobs, er, umm, enthusiasts, is about as much fun as can be had with clothes on! I and the car (being a second-generation Golf/Rabbit, show signs of previous "incidents" (boo boo's), thus, a race team name was born....
Andrew Lippe

Chris "Behner" Behn
#1 Driver and race car mechanic, our resident Ken Miles.
Instead of focusing on his studies in Bio-electric subatomic fusion power generation engineering with a minor in ancient Greek sign language, Andrew spent most of his college years trying to make rusty old 3-series BMW's run reliably. Not quick to realize the the futility of this endeavor, he soon began trying to drive them fast too. Serendipity found him when he was asked to join team Boo Boo Bunny Racing to experience the joy that is a well sorted (with his help) VW Mk2 GTI. Thus breaking his nasty BMW habit, at least for now!
Charlie Powell
Chris "Behner" Behn
Charlie Powell
#2 Driver and resident hot shoe with the most real world racing experience on the team, our Paul Newman.
As a suburban Masshole, Charlie spent his formative years learning the aggressive driving behaviors of his fellow Massholes, between The Pike and Storrow Drive. While his skill sets do not extend beyond track limits, he does excel at car breaking....and occasionally braking too. Costing the team many hours and beers (and fuel pumps) come nearly effortlessly for him. It must be his many misspent hours in front of a PS3 racing simulator that somehow are finally paying dividends for team Boo Boo Bunny. Charlie is welcome in the drivers seat... as long as his damage deposit is up to date!
UPCOMING RACES
Planned for 2026: We'll be back in action one year after my mishap and end to our 2025 season.
This car spent most of its life in California and was used as a track car later in its life there. The car was purchased from a fellow Real Estate agent who inherited this car from a former girlfriend and just needed it gone. It came with some great bits and pieces but unfortunately it needed a lot of love and major structural work to get it up to Lemons spec.
PROGRESS IN 2023
Interior was stripped further, bolt in roll cage removed and pro built welded cage installed by JPC in Stroudsburg, PA. Added fire suppression, new seat, belts etc. Pulled all glass and replaced with Lexan except for windshield. Aim dash, Motorola radio, new aluminum radiator. Steering Rack, new CV axles, front wheel bearings, brake rotors and two complete sets of new rubber, one set Falken and one set Nitto. Shakedown track days at Canaan and Watkins Glen then first Lemons race at NHMS! We finished 65th out of 122 and 24th in class after suffering a dual fuel pump failure that cost us 3 hours. It was only through the generosity of a fellow Golf driving team (Premature Apexers?) that we got a needed spare pump to get back on track!
PROGRESS IN 2024
A lot planned before our first race: all new suspension bushings, brakes, bearings, axles, aero mods, including reinstallation of big-ass rear wing, cam belt, water pump, fuel pumps, more new rubber etc. etc.! Unplanned, complete valve job, rebuilding the entire head, new cable shifter.
Thompson and NHMS testing
The Lemons race at Thompson Speedway in CT was a rough one. It was extremely hot with temps outside in the 90's and in car approaching 115 degrees! I installed a 3 quart drink system with button activated pump, it worked great and was desperately needed! Car ran well initially, with increased stability from the rear wing and front splitter/undertray proving we made improvements. Unfortunately, in the race but we started noticing some power loss and could hear engine knock. No fuel/air gauge to confirm but it was obviously running very lean and also hot. Spark plug change and check on ignition timing yielded no improvement by mid afternoon we pulled the car out of the race to preserve the engine. Once home ordered and installed a fuel pressure sensor and O2 sensor with Innovative Fuel/air input directly into AIM dash. Confirmed car running lean, installed larger injectors from a 1.8 Audi turbo. MUCH BETTER! We also installed two vents in the bonnet to exhaust excess heat. Charlie and I took car to NHMS Mass Tuning track day. Car ran great and we had a blast. Hopefully ready for Halloween Hooptiefest !

WooHoo, what a race! Our hard work and perseverance finally paid off! We finished the 14 hour race 2nd in Class (B) and 10th overall out of a 120 car starting field. Andrew drove a brilliant last stint of the race, stretching fuel mileage to the limit, finishing with a little over 1/2 gallon of fuel remaining! A few minor mishaps during the race, day one the clutch pedal pad broke off the arm (Charlie of course!), we finished the day pushing the clutch pedal arm, no problem. Welded it back on after day one race. We encountered some interesting driving on track and came away with a few more bumps and bruises (boo boo's). One item of note, we tried 225/45-15 tires during testing but found the car felt better on 205/50-15's which is what it raced on. We are now fully amped up for next year and plan to race the 4 Northeast Lemons races making up the Northeast championship. Pitt Race International, New Jersey Motorsports Park, Thompson Speedway and New Hampshire Motor Speedway and maybe Gingerman Raceway. Things to do before then: Get transmission fully serviced (third gear syncro is toast), replace some suspension bushings that seem loose, new front top strut mounts and a lot of the standard maintenance etc.
Finishing position for #171, 10th overall!
Ongoing updates MK2 24-25
Peloquin Torsen diff in good shape!
NJMP 2025 , I'd rather forget....

The car was running well except for a recalcitrant 3rd gear synchro. I started the race, 10 laps in while executing a clean inside pass on a not to be named MR2 approaching turn 4, I was hit in the left rear by same. This "pit maneuver" consequently spun me into the infield grass.

Ok so I spun, no biggie. Unfortunately, upon rejoining, all felt ok with the car. Knowing I had to pit and not wanting to waste time, I accelerated and easing into turn 6 my left rear tire let loose (unbeknownst to me the rim had cracked). This yet again, caused me to spin and into the infield I went sideways. I tire with no air does not

This yet again, caused me to spin and into the infield I went sideways. I tire with no air does not slide well on soft ground and the wheel dug into the soft turf. In slow motion I rolled onto my left side. Lesson learned, DO NOT race back to the pits after an "off"!

The aftermath
Having ruined our chances of finishing well was bad enough. Then I learned from Eric that any driver who ends up on their side or roof (regardless of cause) is suspended immediately for a year. Race ended and season ended. Later in the summer, having repaired the car, Charlie and I had a chance to run it at a track day on the tiny Canaan

Car ran well with exception of 3rd gear synchro.
Planned updates prior to race season 2026
Newly built 020 gearbox using AVX final drive and AUG gearing with a new Wavetrac diff!
Corner balance and finally get a real GVW with the help of a buddy who campaigns (very successfully) in the ACT stock car series.
All body work and misc. damage has been repaired to "good enough" Wing repaired and remounted. New wheel and tire and voila! ready to go!
